I believe that I am inherently competitive. However, I think there are a bunch of different types of competitive personalities. There are the type who believe they have to crush others to get ahead – destroy the competition. I am sure that we all have encountered those people and personally they repel me. I can’t work with those types since I get crushed. My type of competition is working together to be the best you can be. It is more a competition with yourself rather than a competition with others. To succeed in this type of competitive environment you need others to succeed and it is a lot more fun if you find a tribe who all want to be the best they can be.
The essence of “A rising tide lifts all boats” is that when working together we all rise and make each other better. Bits and pieces of an ocean can’t rise faster or slower than the part next to it since it all flows together so this huge thing works together to make it rise. One of the things I love about sailing is, for the most part, people come in off the water and share what they did that day. Which side of the race course they went to and how they set up their boat. This is not universal but it is pretty common post race discussion. The real reason is that the competition is not in the settings but rather in the execution and the aptitude of the individual. There are so many variables that putting it all together is what makes a great sailor.
In business, it is the same thing. There are lots of clients out there and lots of products around. The difference is in the relationship that you have with the person or the business. I often get asked if the market is saturated with Arbonne Consultants, motivational speakers, or travel agents (often the comment is “do travel agents exist any more?!?). The answer is no, since all of these things provide solutions for needs that are common place and I work to build my great relationships with like minded people. I also support and endorse what they do so we are all on the success track together. I love hearing and sharing the stories of other entrepreneurs – they lift me up!
I am always looking for people who compete with life. If you are one of those people, please get it touch – I would love to hear your story.
