As winter approaches, we can all use warm thoughts so I thought I would share with you a Facebook live video I did about a week ago. Waking up to pouring rain almost put a halt to a summer self care morning walk ritual that had become an important aspect of my daily routine. The thought of not going outside and starting my day off with a bit of fresh air really depressed me. I was literally sitting on the couch arguing with myself about what to do when I remembered a saying from my Norwegian Sailing friends “There is no bad weather there is just bad clothing”.
Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlige klær!
Since sailors are often faced with foul weather, I have clothes that are specifically for these conditions on the water so why not try them on not so dry land. I pulled some sailing gear out of the closet, bundled up and headed outside. Once out, it was not so bad after all and my clothing, while not en vogue kept me warm and dry so I could do my morning walk to get my coffee and fully start my day.
As we head into colder darker weather, staying inside is often our default and our urge to cocoon or hibernate for the winter can be strong. Even a few minutes outside brings energy and focus which makes the winter easier to bear which is why the Norwegians are so good at winter sports.
Once I decided that wearing a hat was going to make the winter tolerable and even allow me to extend the sailing season, I found a hat with the biggest pompom and found it makes winter much more fun!
I encourage you to get bundled up in whatever you have and get outside. Self care is important in all seasons even if the weather seems to be conspiring against us. Bad weather can be fun with the right clothing!
We all rise together,
Martha
